Hownam
Hownam Church lies beside the Kale Water in amongst the Cheviot hills, south of Morebattle and east of Jedburgh at the north end of the picturesque village.The parish borders with England and the old Roman Road of Dere Street runs through the parish for 5 miles. The parish also contains Pennymuir, Heatherhope with its reservoir, Towford and many other remote settlements.
Parish
Hownam Parish runs along the Border Ridge for many miles before descending with the Kale towards Morebattle. It is a parish of hill farms. In recognition of this our Harvest is a blessing of the lambs service on the 4th Sunday of May. Many ancient iron age settlements can still be discerned in the hills. Although very lightly populated the valley sustains identity and activity much centred round the Village Hall. Further information is available from

Although the original shape of the church appears to be of a cruciform, the church as it is today has been renovated several times in the past.
In1752 it was reshaped as a rectangle, was further modernised in the1840s and after a large fire in 1907. The south doorway has thought to have remained on site from the 15th or 16th century. This door has the remnants of a set of jougs in the east jamb.The church inside is light and airy with open beams and this has also been re-modernised in recent years.
Worship is on the 4th Sunday of the month at 12.30pm. There is wheelchair access but no loop system
